Mazda MX-5 ND gets aggressive widebody kit

Japanese aftermarket tuning house Liberty Walk has unveiled its latest widebody kit for the Mazda MX-5 ND, delivering a dramatic transformation of the beloved roadster.

Known for its audacious designs on high-end supercars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris, Liberty Walk has applied its signature flair to a far more accessible platform.

The result? A visually striking, aggressively stanced MX-5 that will divide enthusiasts.

While the MX-5 has long been celebrated for its nimble handling and lightweight purity, Liberty Walk’s interpretation leans heavily into aesthetic impact.

The kit features exaggerated fender flares with exposed fasteners, pushing the wheels significantly wider than the stock setup. The rear fender extensions even flow into the doors, ensuring a seamless but assertive look.

The modifications extend beyond just the flares. A pronounced front splitter, oversized rear diffuser and towering rear spoiler complete the aggressive aerodynamic package.

The extreme stance, achieved by a lowered suspension setup and aggressively cambered Yokohama tyres wrapped around Work Meister wheels, delivers undeniable visual drama.

However, the extreme camber and slammed ride height suggest compromises to the MX-5’s renowned handling dynamics.

Liberty Walk’s hallmark style – bold aesthetics over functional purity – is fully realised here.

The widebody Mazda MX-5 ND will make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2025, Japan’s premier automotive customisation showcase.

For prospective buyers, the pricing is surprisingly reasonable compared to Liberty Walk’s supercar kits. The complete widebody package starts at approximately NZ$8270 for the fibreglass version and climbs to around NZ$11,050 for the carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) option.

Compared to the brand’s Lamborghini kits, which can exceed NZ$88,500, this represents an accessible entry into the Liberty Walk universe.

While purists might wince at the suspension setup and extreme aesthetic choices, there’s no denying the visual impact of Liberty Walk’s MX-5. It’s a bold interpretation of a beloved platform, unapologetically prioritising style over driving dynamics.

Whether you’re a fan or a critic, Liberty Walk has once again delivered a showstopper that demands attention – for better or worse.
