Are larger insurance companies cheaper?
Large insurance companies don’t always have cheaper rates than smaller, regional insurers. As the following table shows, smaller insurers sometimes have lower rates than their larger competitors.
The company with the cheapest car insurance rates can change even across different parts of the same city. The cost of insurance depends on location, as well as other personal factors like your age, vehicle and driving history — no two drivers will have the same rate.

Finding the right car insurance company for you
The right insurer depends on the amount of coverage you need. While states have minimum requirements that all drivers must carry, you can decide to add any extra coverage, like gap insurance, custom equipment coverage.
You’ll be able to narrow down your list of insurers when you know what types of auto insurance you need, since not every insurance company has the same offerings. Then, it’s a matter of finding one in your budget with acceptable customer service.
Here are some tips for finding the right company and getting insured:
Collect some basic information. This includes the driving history of the licensed drivers in your home, as well as facts about your car, such as safety features and estimated annual miles driven. Having this information on hand will make shopping go a lot quicker.
Determine which types of coverage you need. For example, do you want only the bare minimum insurance that your state requires, or do you want full coverage insurance and extra coverage options. Check that each company you’re considering has the options you want.
Compare apples to apples. When comparing rates from different insurers, make sure each offers the same coverage limits and deductibles. You may not want to make your decision based on price alone. Pay attention to the complaints each company has, as a high number of complaints could be a red flag about the quality of service you’ll receive.
Don’t forget about the smaller insurance companies. When shopping for car insurance, consider a wide range of choices. We offer a list of the nation’s biggest car insurance companies to smaller, regional insurers that you might not have been aware of before comparing quotes.
Consider switching insurance companies. Your car insurance rates won’t stay the same year after year. Before renewing your policy, shop around for coverage and make sure you’re still getting a good deal. If another insurer offers you cheaper rates, consider switching your policy.
