KUTV — Keeping your car in top condition ensures not only its longevity but also your safety on the road.
Regular maintenance doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming, but it can save you from costly repairs down the line.
Jason Hollinger, a service manager at Ken Garff Honda of Orem, spoke to Kari Hawker-Diaz about some essential car care tips to keep your vehicle running smoothly.
1. Schedule Regular Oil Changes
Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. To prevent damage, schedule oil changes every 3,000 to 7,500 miles, depending on your car’s make and your driving conditions. Neglecting oil changes can lead to reduced performance and costly engine repairs.
2. Check Fluid Levels
Your car relies on several fluids to operate efficiently:
- Coolant: Prevents overheating.
- Brake Fluid: Ensures responsive braking.
- Transmission Fluid: Keeps gears shifting smoothly.
Check these fluids regularly and top them off as needed for optimal performance.
3. Care for Your Tires
Proper tire maintenance improves safety and fuel efficiency. Follow these guidelines:
- Check tire pressure monthly to ensure proper inflation.
- Rotate tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles for even wear.
- Replace tires if the tread is low or visible damage occurs.
4. Don’t Ignore Your Brakes
Brakes are vital for your safety. If you notice screeching, grinding, or a spongy brake pedal, schedule an inspection immediately. Addressing brake issues early can prevent accidents and expensive repairs.
5. Maintain Your Battery
Car batteries typically last 3 to 5 years. Signs of a failing battery include slow starts and visible corrosion on terminals. Keep jumper cables in your car for emergencies and replace the battery when needed.
6. Routine Professional Inspections
Every 6 to 12 months, have a professional inspect major systems like the engine, transmission, and suspension. Identifying small problems early can save you from big headaches later.
7. Understand Dashboard Warning Lights
Your car’s dashboard lights are there for a reason. Learn what each warning light means, and take immediate action if one appears. Addressing issues promptly can prevent bigger and costlier problems.
