Winter car care: Tips to keep your vehicle running smoothly in freezing temperatures

RACINE, WI –  Freezing temperatures can be brutal on cars, causing problems that leave drivers stranded. As winter deepens, preventive winter car care can keep your vehicle running smoothly until spring.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials say vehicle owners should take some time to make sure the following items on their vehicles are maintained:

  • Check tire tread and traction. Ensure tires are properly inflated.
  • Inspect the battery, anti-freeze, and cooling systems.
  • Replace worn windshield wipers and top off washer fluid.
  • Verify that headlights and other lights are working.
  • Keep the fuel tank at least half-full to prevent freezing and ensure enough fuel if stranded.
  • Clear snow and ice from windows, hood, and roof before driving.
  • Consider a mechanic visit for a full inspection.

And if you haven’t yet, now is a great time to prepare an emergency kit for your car. The Division of Transportation suggests drivers keep these items in the back seat in case the trunk becomes jammed:

  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Extra caps, warm socks, gloves and mittens
  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • First-aid kit
  • Booster cables and windshield brush/scraper
  • Drinking water and high-calorie, non-perishable food (trail mix, energy/protein bars)
  • Sand or cat litter for traction
  • Cell phone adapter or charger

Check road conditions before hitting the road. The DOT updates its winter weather conditions website here.

If you become stranded, DOT officials urge drivers and passengers to stay calm and buckled in your car.

“Along with protecting you from the elements, your vehicle offers protection should other vehicles slide out of control,” according to the Wisconsin DOT website. “Getting out of your vehicle and walking near a highway is dangerous any time of year.”

Here are some more tips:

  • If possible, call 911 on your cell phone and be prepared to best describe your location and situation.
  • Do not get out of your vehicle and shovel or try to push your vehicle. Overexertion can complicate your situation.
  • If you need to have your vehicle on to stay warm, run your vehicle for brief periods and make sure the exhaust system is working properly and not blocked by snow.
  • Keeping your dome light on during low-light conditions can make it easier for rescue crews to find you.

Chris Verhyen, communications specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, says a little preparation can go a long way.

“Vehicle maintenance is always important, but even more so as we enter the winter months,” Verheyen said.
